Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Telecoms and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.01%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 2.01% or 1.37 points to trade at 69.41 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 1.43% or 2.17 points to end at 153.68 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.69% or 1.01 points to 147.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.99% or 3.41 points to trade at 168.12 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.84% or 0.99 points to end at 52.78 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.57% or 0.52 points to 32.60.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which rose 4.65% to 1.35, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which was up 4.61% to settle at 74.84 and Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ:YHOO) which gained 2.21% to close at 50.96.
The worst performers were Tegna Inc (NYSE:TGNA) which was down 6.42% to 22.0100 in late trade, H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which lost 6.01% to settle at 25.18 and DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which was down 5.97% to 62.09 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were xG Technology Inc (NASDAQ:XGTI) which rose 39.31% to 2.0200, Natures Sunshine Products Inc (NASDAQ:NATR) which was up 27.68% to settle at 11.30 and Lightbridge Corp (NASDAQ:LTBR) which gained 26.71% to close at 1.8500.
The worst performers were EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) which was down 28.20% to 4.3800 in late trade, Mirna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MIRN) which lost 27.59% to settle at 1.470 and Cartesian I (NASDAQ:CRTN) which was down 23.42% to 0.490 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1784 to 1418 and 44 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1308 fell and 1194 advanced, while 115 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.25% to 10.55.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.56% or 6.92 to $1236.92 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.59% or 0.29 to hit $48.56 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.50% or 0.26 to trade at $51.56 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.01% to 1.1086, while USD/JPY fell 0.66% to 113.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.77% at 98.05.
