Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.49% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 3.02% or 7.55 points to trade at 257.68 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.60% or 1.35 points to end at 53.19 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.39% or 6.78 points to 289.94 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.14% or 2.72 points to trade at 236.58 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 0.76% or 0.33 points to end at 43.33 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.61% or 0.74 points to 119.68.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which rose 5.02% to 66.47, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was up 4.59% to settle at 15.71 and Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which gained 4.11% to close at 24.82.
The worst performers were Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which was down 7.13% to 37.80 in late trade, Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which lost 6.03% to settle at 68.58 and Mattel Inc (NASDAQ:MAT) which was down 4.88% to 14.62 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Proteostasis Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTI) which rose 161.28% to 6.14, Apollo Medical Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AMEH) which was up 53.79% to settle at 16.67 and Repros Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RPRX) which gained 41.45% to close at 0.66.
The worst performers were Dextera Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:DXTR) which was down 35.04% to 0.0890 in late trade, Yield10 Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:YTEN) which lost 24.05% to settle at 4.200 and Casi Pharma (NASDAQ:CASI) which was down 20.00% to 2.6800 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1694 to 1396 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1399 fell and 1108 advanced, while 138 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.57% to 9.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.07% or 0.90 to $1246.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 1.31% or 0.76 to hit $57.23 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.76% or 1.14 to trade at $63.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.19% to 1.1747, while USD/JPY fell 0.05% to 113.50.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 94.02.
