Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Industrials, Financials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.20%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.13% or 3.37 points to trade at 161.61 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.82% or 4.10 points to end at 229.48 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 1.33% or 2.03 points to 154.57 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.89% or 0.98 points to trade at 50.88 in late trade. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) declined 1.61% or 1.11 points to end at 67.88 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 0.64% or 0.66 points to 103.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which rose 4.75% to 93.44, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which was up 3.38% to settle at 126.83 and Broadcom Ltd (NASDAQ:AVGO) which gained 2.75% to close at 267.76.
The worst performers were EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which was down 5.19% to 49.73 in late trade, Williams Companies Inc (NYSE:WMB) which lost 5.15% to settle at 26.69 and Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) which was down 4.83% to 117.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Stein Mart Inc (NASDAQ:SMRT) which rose 67.53% to 1.29, KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which was up 46.76% to settle at 7.2500 and Image Sensing Systems Inc (NASDAQ:ISNS) which gained 44.26% to close at 4.400.
The worst performers were Solid Biosciences LLC (NASDAQ:SLDB) which was down 64.58% to 9.32 in late trade, Yield10 Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:YTEN) which lost 27.27% to settle at 2.160 and Origin Agritech Limited (NASDAQ:SEED) which was down 27.01% to 1.000 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1932 to 1105 and 151 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1407 fell and 1119 advanced, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.06% to 16.53.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.75% or 10.00 to $1315.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.39% or 0.24 to hit $61.20 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.29% or 0.19 to trade at $65.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.53% to 1.2301, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 106.37.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.46% at 90.16.
