Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Services, Healthcare and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.46% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.55% or 1.65 points to trade at 48.10 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.67% or 2.54 points to end at 154.82 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 1.66% or 3.52 points to 215.71 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.00% or 1.69 points to trade at 82.77 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.37% or 2.85 points to end at 204.75 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.89% or 1.49 points to 165.18.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which rose 3.55% to 48.10, Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which was up 3.38% to settle at 47.42 and Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) which gained 2.80% to close at 60.25.
The worst performers were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 7.64% to 29.020 in late trade, Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which lost 5.56% to settle at 47.41 and Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which was down 5.10% to 162.10 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were vTv Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VTVT) which rose 158.77% to 2.00, Davidstea Inc (NASDAQ:DTEA) which was up 63.14% to settle at 4.16 and Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which gained 39.83% to close at 1.6500.
The worst performers were MoSys Inc (NASDAQ:MOSY) which was down 55.37% to 0.2611 in late trade, GreenPro Capital Corp (NASDAQ:GRNQ) which lost 44.44% to settle at 5.500000 and ARCA Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:ABIO) which was down 35.29% to 0.660 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1840 to 1229 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1795 fell and 833 advanced, while 82 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.42% to 12.05.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.30% or 15.50 to $1207.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.24% or 0.18 to hit $75.12 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.44% or 0.37 to trade at $84.61 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.23% to 1.1551, while USD/JPY fell 0.25% to 113.63.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 95.10.
