Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.39%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 6.10% or 6.48 points to trade at 112.68 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.37% or 7.60 points to end at 328.02 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 1.75% or 3.03 points to 176.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 8.61% or 4.36 points to trade at 46.25 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 2.22% or 1.12 points to end at 49.29 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.86% or 1.51 points to 79.52.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Agilent Technologies Inc (NYSE:A) which rose 6.13% to 69.61, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which was up 6.10% to settle at 112.68 and NetApp Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP) which gained 3.94% to close at 46.47.
The worst performers were Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which was down 22.60% to 19.35 in late trade, General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which lost 11.41% to settle at 8.00 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) which was down 8.61% to 46.25 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kaixin Auto Holdings (NASDAQ:KXIN) which rose 35.30% to 1.88, SpartanNash Co (NASDAQ:SPTN) which was up 28.19% to settle at 11.46 and Destination Maternity Corporation (NASDAQ:DEST) which gained 27.55% to close at 0.75.
The worst performers were Limbach Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:LMB) which was down 42.72% to 4.84 in late trade, Titan Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TTNP) which lost 37.43% to settle at 0.4380 and VERB TECHNOLOGY COMPANY INC (NASDAQ:VERB) which was down 32.89% to 1.275 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1510 to 1505 and 27 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1582 fell and 1071 advanced, while 90 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.16% to 21.18.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.39% or 6.00 to $1533.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.92% or 0.51 to hit $54.72 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $58.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1108, while USD/JPY fell 0.00% to 106.11.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 98.015.
