Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.32% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.66% or 7.12 points to trade at 275.07 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.67% or 1.63 points to end at 98.96 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.51% or 0.60 points to 40.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.64% or 2.47 points to trade at 90.92 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.52% or 2.76 points to end at 178.49 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) shed 1.07% or 2.02 points to 187.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mettler-Toledo International Inc (NYSE:MTD) which rose 17.25% to 1,513.03, Gen Digital Inc (NASDAQ:GEN) which was up 15.34% to settle at 23.46 and Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which gained 6.09% to close at 314.10.
The worst performers were Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which was down 11.00% to 91.19 in late trade, Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ:PODD) which lost 6.55% to settle at 165.90 and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 4.39% to 117.31 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aeye Inc (NASDAQ:LIDR) which rose 118.64% to 2.58, Novavax Inc (NASDAQ:NVAX) which was up 98.66% to settle at 8.88 and Iteos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ITOS) which gained 43.07% to close at 17.44.
The worst performers were MacroGenics Inc (NASDAQ:MGNX) which was down 77.44% to 3.31 in late trade, Evolv Technologies Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EVLV) which lost 38.54% to settle at 2.36 and Greenwave Technology Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:GWAV) which was down 37.20% to 0.04 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1576 to 1271 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2104 fell and 1261 advanced, while 105 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.10% to 12.55 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.29% or 30.10 to $2,370.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.21% or 0.96 to hit $78.30 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.28% or 1.07 to trade at $82.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.18% to 155.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 105.17.
