Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.32% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 2.96% or 1.48 points to trade at 51.48 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.31% or 1.31 points to end at 57.91 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.47% or 4.85 points to 334.48 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 3.08% or 1.50 points to trade at 47.01 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 1.40% or 3.02 points to end at 212.10 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 1.01% or 1.47 points to 144.36.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which rose 12.39% to 67.29, Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which was up 8.10% to settle at 28.03 and Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which gained 8.16% to close at 22.41.
The worst performers were Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:AKAM) which was down 10.88% to 105.13 in late trade, FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which lost 7.86% to settle at 107.21 and Interpublic Group of Companies Inc (NYSE:IPG) which was down 6.66% to 24.54 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bio Path Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BPTH) which rose 135.58% to 12.25, Anchiano Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ANCN) which was up 78.57% to settle at 5.000 and Sundial Growers Inc (NASDAQ:SNDL) which gained 70.30% to close at 2.81.
The worst performers were Panbela Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PBLA) which was down 26.22% to 6.05 in late trade, Sino-Global Shipping America Ltd (NASDAQ:SINO) which lost 24.29% to settle at 6.8900 and Comstock Holding Companies Inc (NASDAQ:CHCI) which was down 20.64% to 6.650 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1733 to 1293 and 67 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1640 fell and 1468 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.69% to 21.78.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.26% or 4.80 to $1842.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.39% or 0.23 to hit $58.59 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.23% or 0.14 to trade at $61.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.07% to 1.2126, while USD/JPY rose 0.07% to 104.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 90.382.
