Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.29% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.81% or 1.86 points to trade at 68.08 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.67% or 2.83 points to end at 108.94 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 2.25% or 1.71 points to 77.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 2.38% or 5.55 points to trade at 228.08 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.49% or 2.74 points to end at 181.51 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) shed 1.14% or 2.65 points to 229.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which rose 7.55% to 25.22, Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which was up 7.15% to settle at 21.13 and Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which gained 6.95% to close at 25.54.
The worst performers were Verisk Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:VRSK) which was down 8.45% to 172.59 in late trade, AmerisourceBergen (NYSE:ABC) which lost 5.56% to settle at 118.85 and Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc (NYSE:HLT) which was down 4.46% to 122.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nemaura Medical Inc (NASDAQ:NMRD) which rose 134.47% to 11.02, Chiasma Inc (NASDAQ:CHMA) which was up 39.79% to settle at 3.97 and Big 5 Sporting Goods Corporation (NASDAQ:BGFV) which gained 31.20% to close at 25.02.
The worst performers were Cocrystal Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:COCP) which was down 31.78% to 1.4600 in late trade, Intrusion Inc (NASDAQ:INTZ) which lost 29.31% to settle at 10.18 and Sequential Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:SQBG) which was down 26.73% to 12.4700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1712 to 1488 and 92 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1966 fell and 1384 advanced, while 109 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.59% to 19.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.62% or 11.05 to $1787.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.65% or 0.43 to hit $65.26 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.35% or 0.24 to trade at $68.64 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.08% to 1.2003, while USD/JPY fell 0.12% to 109.20.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 91.265.
