Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.91%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.32% or 4.59 points to trade at 351.27 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.28% or 1.83 points to end at 144.50 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.09% or 2.91 points to 269.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 3.10% or 3.69 points to trade at 115.23 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.66% or 3.77 points to end at 223.10 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.28% or 3.04 points to 234.52.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were General Mills Inc (NYSE:GIS) which rose 3.21% to 47.01, CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) which was up 3.15% to settle at 54.62 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which gained 2.86% to close at 64.02.
The worst performers were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 9.87% to 44.65 in late trade, KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which lost 9.72% to settle at 107.28 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 8.92% to 127.85 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Gemphire Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GEMP) which rose 42.04% to 2.23, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARWR) which was up 37.52% to settle at 19.39 and WSI Industries Inc (NASDAQ:WSCI) which gained 33.01% to close at 6.850.
The worst performers were Iovance Biotherapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:IOVA) which was down 24.78% to 12.750 in late trade, Mercantil Bank Holding Corp Class A (NASDAQ:MBNAA) which lost 19.80% to settle at 20.25 and Dicerna Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DRNA) which was down 18.11% to 13.020 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1783 to 1252 and 115 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1694 fell and 908 advanced, while 105 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.10% to 14.62.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.36% or 4.30 to $1205.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 1.14% or 0.78 to hit $67.94 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.71% or 0.55 to trade at $76.72 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.03% to 1.1627, while USD/JPY fell 0.73% to 110.72.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 94.97.
