Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which rose 1.95% or 1.70 points to trade at 89.00 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.74% or 1.89 points to end at 110.56 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.27% or 3.41 points to 271.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which lost 2.42% or 1.83 points to trade at 73.75 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.13% or 2.83 points to end at 247.67 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 0.92% or 0.44 points to 47.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which rose 16.11% to 83.33, eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) which was up 13.86% to settle at 46.20 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which gained 6.77% to close at 103.79.
The worst performers were Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which was down 8.16% to 70.03 in late trade, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which lost 7.17% to settle at 79.20 and United Parcel Service Inc (NYSE:UPS) which was down 6.34% to 119.25 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were QuinStreet Inc (NASDAQ:QNST) which rose 36.98% to 12.780, Affimed NV (NASDAQ:AFMD) which was up 33.34% to settle at 1.800 and Akers Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:AKER) which gained 32.47% to close at 0.372.
The worst performers were Proteostasis Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTI) which was down 23.33% to 3.55 in late trade, NIC Inc (NASDAQ:EGOV) which lost 20.18% to settle at 13.25 and Electro Scientific Industries Inc (NASDAQ:ESIO) which was down 19.21% to 18.92 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1737 to 1401 and 40 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1271 rose and 1256 declined, while 93 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.14% to 12.98.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.63% or 8.40 to $1351.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.87% or 1.21 to hit $65.94 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.28% or 0.88 to trade at $69.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.82% to 1.2515, while USD/JPY rose 0.17% to 109.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.56% at 88.45.
