Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Consumer Services and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which rose 1.28% or 0.90 points to trade at 71.14 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.08% or 0.93 points to end at 86.98 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 1.03% or 0.47 points to 45.94 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 2.01% or 2.03 points to trade at 98.75 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.59% or 0.89 points to end at 55.15 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.51% or 3.68 points to 239.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were GGP Inc (NYSE:GGP) which rose 16.78% to 22.20, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which was up 8.43% to settle at 58.76 and Expeditors International Washington (NASDAQ:EXPD) which gained 7.91% to close at 62.04.
The worst performers were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which was down 23.22% to 30.35 in late trade, Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:PCLN) which lost 13.52% to settle at 1645.72 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which was down 5.92% to 36.89 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Rand Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:RLOG) which rose 314.12% to 1.9000, Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was up 43.51% to settle at 1.8800 and Cyren Ltd (NASDAQ:CYRN) which gained 42.42% to close at 2.350.
The worst performers were Selecta Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SELB) which was down 54.02% to 10.36 in late trade, Teligent Inc (NASDAQ:TLGT) which lost 43.62% to settle at 2.960 and Five Prime Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FPRX) which was down 41.13% to 25.76 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1776 to 1343 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1818 fell and 707 advanced, while 120 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.06% to 9.97.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.39% or 5.02 to $1276.58 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.21% or 0.12 to hit $57.23 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.82% or 0.53 to trade at $63.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.17% to 1.1590, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 113.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 94.80.
