Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.53%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.38% or 2.78 points to trade at 204.07 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 1.19% or 0.97 points to end at 82.44 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 1.13% or 0.54 points to 48.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.75% or 3.71 points to trade at 131.39 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 1.59% or 1.32 points to end at 81.71 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.25% or 1.51 points to 119.36.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 15.26% to 66.93, Flowserve Corporation (NYSE:FLS) which was up 7.83% to settle at 53.00 and ANSYS Inc (NASDAQ:ANSS) which gained 6.18% to close at 169.68.
The worst performers were Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 16.32% to 62.88 in late trade, Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which lost 13.13% to settle at 99.02 and DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which was down 8.97% to 34.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Novelion Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:NVLN) which rose 77.23% to 1.250, I-AM Capital Acquisition Co (NASDAQ:IAM) which was up 66.11% to settle at 10.00 and FTD Companies Inc (NASDAQ:FTD) which gained 47.24% to close at 2.93.
The worst performers were NN Inc (NASDAQ:NNBR) which was down 34.39% to 8.07 in late trade, Talend SA (NASDAQ:TLND) which lost 30.95% to settle at 43.43 and ReShape Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:RSLS) which was down 29.67% to 1.9400 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1642 to 1427 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1327 fell and 1299 advanced, while 91 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.20% to 16.72.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.16% or 2.00 to $1224.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.67% or 1.03 to hit $60.64 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.80% or 1.30 to trade at $70.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.55% to 1.1364, while USD/JPY rose 0.48% to 114.06.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.71% at 96.49.
