Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.56% or 1.24 points to trade at 49.60 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.11% or 0.94 points to end at 85.51 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 1.08% or 1.39 points to 130.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 1.93% or 4.05 points to trade at 205.34 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 1.46% or 1.25 points to end at 84.50 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.00% or 2.53 points to 249.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) which rose 3.85% to 99.00, Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which was up 2.70% to settle at 47.15 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) which gained 2.56% to close at 49.60.
The worst performers were Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) which was down 7.40% to 45.70 in late trade, Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which lost 5.71% to settle at 21.65 and Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ:CELG) which was down 5.50% to 93.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) which rose 100.98% to 2.05, Immunic Inc (NASDAQ:IMUX) which was up 90.86% to settle at 17.75 and PCM Inc (NASDAQ:PCMI) which gained 42.90% to close at 34.84.
The worst performers were Taronis Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TRNX) which was down 27.93% to 0.193 in late trade, 360 Finance Inc (NASDAQ:QFIN) which lost 21.75% to settle at 10.79 and Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives Inc (NASDAQ:IEA) which was down 19.74% to 1.83 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1794 to 1222 and 19 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1878 fell and 775 advanced, while 95 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.91% to 15.26.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.65% or 23.10 to $1423.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.56% or 0.32 to hit $57.75 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.02 to trade at $64.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1398, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 107.29.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.23% at 95.498.
