Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 1.14% or 1.35 points to trade at 119.28 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 1.07% or 1.23 points to end at 116.05 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.07% or 2.08 points to 196.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 1.73% or 1.80 points to trade at 102.16 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.14% or 2.35 points to end at 203.84 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 0.95% or 0.32 points to 33.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ViacomCBS Inc (NASDAQ:VIAC) which rose 5.15% to 24.50, HollyFrontier Corporation (NYSE:HFC) which was up 4.90% to settle at 32.56 and Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) which gained 4.61% to close at 76.24.
The worst performers were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was down 7.52% to 260.30 in late trade, Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:ROST) which lost 4.45% to settle at 92.38 and Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which was down 3.58% to 48.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Alpine Immune Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:ALPN) which rose 134.98% to 10.95, Urban One Inc Bats (NASDAQ:UONE) which was up 96.70% to settle at 25.000 and Aethlon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AEMD) which gained 89.36% to close at 2.670.
The worst performers were Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was down 40.31% to 0.3820 in late trade, Atlantic American Corporation (NASDAQ:AAME) which lost 33.21% to settle at 1.850 and Arts-Way Manufacturing Co Inc (NASDAQ:ARTW) which was down 32.83% to 2.680 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1648 to 1200 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1356 fell and 1336 advanced, while 57 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.58% to 32.94.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.33% or 5.75 to $1729.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.32% or 0.88 to hit $38.84 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.03 to trade at $41.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1205, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 106.99.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.29% at 97.425.
