Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.07%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 6.73% or 2.73 points to trade at 43.35 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 2.12% or 5.73 points to end at 276.12 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.76% or 6.50 points to 376.17 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 9.83% or 5.24 points to trade at 48.04 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 8.09% or 13.74 points to end at 156.04 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 3.71% or 0.80 points to 20.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which rose 6.73% to 43.35, Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which was up 3.66% to settle at 303.95 and Gen Digital Inc (NASDAQ:GEN) which gained 3.24% to close at 20.40.
The worst performers were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) which was down 9.83% to 48.04 in late trade, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which lost 8.09% to settle at 156.04 and Bath & Body Works Inc. (NYSE:BBWI) which was down 6.81% to 30.10 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Safe & Green Development Corp (NASDAQ:SGD) which rose 558.70% to 3.03, Alpha Technology Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ATGL) which was up 136.18% to settle at 29.83 and Wavedancer Inc (NASDAQ:WAVD) which gained 84.77% to close at 2.79.
The worst performers were Volcon Inc (NASDAQ:VLCN) which was down 64.52% to 0.23 in late trade, Homology Medicines Inc (NASDAQ:FIXX) which lost 34.99% to settle at 0.57 and NLS Pharmaceutics AG (NASDAQ:NLSP) which was down 34.44% to 0.32 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1841 to 1054 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2352 fell and 1099 advanced, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.99% to 14.32.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.01% or 19.85 to $1,984.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 4.85% or 3.72 to hit $72.94 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 4.51% or 3.66 to trade at $77.52 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.39% to 150.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 104.29.
