Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 0.99% or 0.83 points to trade at 84.87 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.97% or 2.00 points to end at 207.75 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 0.87% or 1.53 points to 177.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 2.18% or 2.69 points to trade at 120.91 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.99% or 3.37 points to end at 165.82 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.51% or 0.87 points to 56.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which rose 3.91% to 15.67, Harris Corporation (NYSE:LHX) which was up 3.56% to settle at 191.26 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which gained 3.46% to close at 33.15.
The worst performers were DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which was down 5.37% to 52.53 in late trade, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which lost 4.17% to settle at 26.40 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 3.21% to 10.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ARC Group Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:ARCW) which rose 60.39% to 0.420, Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was up 43.67% to settle at 0.6537 and Electrameccanica Vehicles Corp (NASDAQ:SOLO) which gained 35.34% to close at 3.1400.
The worst performers were Naked Brand Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NAKD) which was down 31.93% to 0.180 in late trade, Taronis Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TRNX) which lost 28.49% to settle at 0.195 and MMTEC Inc (NASDAQ:MTC) which was down 22.08% to 15.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1513 to 1477 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1427 rose and 1232 declined, while 84 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.93% to 14.09.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.02% or 0.35 to $1399.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.23% or 0.71 to hit $58.37 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $64.48 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1207, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 108.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.11% at 97.093.
