Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.09%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.63% or 3.34 points to trade at 208.37 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.20% or 3.55 points to end at 298.95 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 1.12% or 1.57 points to 141.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 2.81% or 4.66 points to trade at 161.01 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.70% or 5.77 points to end at 333.91 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.32% or 0.52 points to 38.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tyler Technologies Inc (NYSE:TYL) which rose 3.42% to 375.00, PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which was up 3.30% to settle at 62.59 and State Street Corp (NYSE:STT) which gained 3.05% to close at 74.90.
The worst performers were Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which was down 7.37% to 42.08 in late trade, Signature Bank (OTC:SBNY) which lost 6.73% to settle at 0.15 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was down 4.66% to 7.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were BELLUS Health Inc (NASDAQ:BLU) which rose 98.90% to 14.44, Agrify Corp (NASDAQ:AGFY) which was up 73.91% to settle at 0.30 and Oblong Inc (NASDAQ:OBLG) which gained 61.22% to close at 3.45.
The worst performers were China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc (NASDAQ:CJJD) which was down 85.85% to 0.68 in late trade, United Insurance Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:UIHC) which lost 48.28% to settle at 1.80 and Tempest Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TPST) which was down 40.27% to 2.21 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1620 to 1354 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2143 fell and 1474 advanced, while 147 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.71% to 16.83 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.55% or 10.95 to $2,017.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.06% or 0.05 to hit $80.88 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.02 to trade at $84.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.31% to 134.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.36% at 101.43.
