Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.00%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 1.19% or 1.42 points to trade at 120.32 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.07% or 0.51 points to end at 48.27 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.06% or 0.63 points to 60.13 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.81% or 1.72 points to trade at 59.49 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM) declined 2.19% or 1.60 points to end at 71.49 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.67% or 2.04 points to 119.90.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 13.61% to 13.02, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which was up 12.92% to settle at 70.51 and HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which gained 6.36% to close at 19.57.
The worst performers were Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which was down 14.44% to 77.20 in late trade, Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) which lost 7.32% to settle at 38.73 and Perrigo Company PLC (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 6.72% to 50.51 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Diversified Restaurant Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SAUC) which rose 121.28% to 1.040, FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FCEL) which was up 101.57% to settle at 0.540 and Constellation Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CNST) which gained 90.25% to close at 28.10.
The worst performers were Fluidigm Corporation (NASDAQ:FLDM) which was down 50.88% to 2.51 in late trade, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which lost 32.78% to settle at 0.1378 and Supernus Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SUPN) which was down 31.58% to 19.930 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1514 to 1337 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1702 fell and 924 advanced, while 91 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.66% to 12.62.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.57% or 8.40 to $1492.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.47% or 0.84 to hit $56.39 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.89% or 1.19 to trade at $61.77 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1072, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 108.96.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 97.787.
