Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.00%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.95%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 1.77% or 1.03 points to trade at 59.29 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.06% or 1.29 points to end at 122.82 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 0.61% or 0.26 points to 42.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 6.44% or 31.56 points to trade at 458.14 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 2.41% or 6.83 points to end at 276.21 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.74% or 1.61 points to 90.95.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) which rose 3.77% to 169.49, Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which was up 3.41% to settle at 211.38 and Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which gained 2.65% to close at 177.22.
The worst performers were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which was down 13.41% to 304.33 in late trade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which lost 7.98% to settle at 19.27 and CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 7.21% to 73.82 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) which rose 304.11% to 5.90, XTI Aerospace Inc (NASDAQ:XTIA) which was up 69.90% to settle at 3.50 and HWH International Inc (NASDAQ:HWH) which gained 62.96% to close at 1.54.
The worst performers were Acorda Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACOR) which was down 81.44% to 2.50 in late trade, Gritstone Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:GRTS) which lost 48.94% to settle at 1.20 and Yield10 Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:YTEN) which was down 42.57% to 0.22 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2099 to 770 and 63 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2461 fell and 944 advanced, while 87 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.03% to 14.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.81% or 40.85 to $2,297.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.91% or 1.60 to hit $85.31 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.94% or 1.70 to trade at $89.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 151.58.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 104.53.
