Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.64%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 0.59% or 1.72 points to trade at 291.52 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) fell 0.14% or 0.08 points to end at 55.27 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was down 0.16% or 0.19 points to 119.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 1.82% or 2.46 points to trade at 132.81 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.36% or 1.98 points to end at 143.77 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 1.28% or 1.62 points to 124.47.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which rose 2.50% to 45.54, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 2.44% to settle at 43.75 and TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which gained 1.81% to close at 21.32.
The worst performers were Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) which was down 3.71% to 20.77 in late trade, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which lost 2.38% to settle at 13.10 and Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which was down 2.37% to 25.50 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Savara Inc (NASDAQ:SVRA) which rose 183.81% to 4.910, Sol Gel Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:SLGL) which was up 58.18% to settle at 14.60 and InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which gained 56.42% to close at 0.28.
The worst performers were Wave Life Sciences Ltd (NASDAQ:WVE) which was down 49.46% to 7.99 in late trade, Melinta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MLNT) which lost 24.18% to settle at 0.470 and Tiziana Life Sciences PLC ADR (NASDAQ:TLSA) which was down 18.62% to 2.36 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1674 to 1169 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1574 fell and 1080 advanced, while 79 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.35% to 14.82.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.01% or 0.10 to $1518.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.10% or 0.06 to hit $61.66 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.33% or 0.22 to trade at $66.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1200, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 108.89.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.11% at 96.440.
