Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.50%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.00% or 0.66 points to trade at 66.73 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.65% or 1.34 points to end at 208.87 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.34% or 0.48 points to 140.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which lost 1.74% or 1.18 points to trade at 66.56 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 1.58% or 1.83 points to end at 113.90 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.23% or 1.77 points to 142.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nielsen Holdings (NYSE:NLSN) which rose 12.02% to 24.61, Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which was up 6.22% to settle at 72.74 and News Corp B (NASDAQ:NWS) which gained 3.72% to close at 13.95.
The worst performers were Lennar Corporation (NYSE:LEN) which was down 4.87% to 50.78 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 4.61% to settle at 4.445 and Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was down 4.35% to 41.37 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ReShape Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:RSLS) which rose 38.00% to 0.1311, Ability Inc (NASDAQ:ABIL) which was up 30.22% to settle at 5.99 and iFresh Inc (NASDAQ:IFMK) which gained 29.25% to close at 3.80.
The worst performers were Sphere 3D Corp (NASDAQ:ANY) which was down 32.43% to 0.205 in late trade, Determine Inc (NASDAQ:DTRM) which lost 21.89% to settle at 0.929 and Broadway Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:BYFC) which was down 20.32% to 1.490 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2042 to 1029 and 41 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1625 fell and 939 advanced, while 141 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.16% to 14.76 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.50% or 18.30 to $1200.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.44% or 0.30 to hit $67.33 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.08% or 0.06 to trade at $72.75 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.05% to 1.1405, while USD/JPY fell 0.15% to 110.64.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 96.17.
