Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.45%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.79%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 3.11% or 7.86 points to trade at 260.80 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.50% or 1.30 points to end at 88.13 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.53% or 0.95 points to 179.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 2.07% or 4.48 points to trade at 211.58 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 2.05% or 7.30 points to end at 348.26 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.32% or 2.24 points to 167.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which rose 14.87% to 521.60, DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which was up 9.56% to settle at 8.37 and Organon & Co (NYSE:OGN) which gained 8.99% to close at 23.76.
The worst performers were International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 19.37% to 64.78 in late trade, Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) which lost 9.51% to settle at 39.89 and DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was down 8.91% to 110.19 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bruush Oral Care Inc Unit (NASDAQ:BRSH) which rose 139.13% to 7.70, Vivos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VVOS) which was up 53.22% to settle at 0.40 and Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INFI) which gained 45.88% to close at 0.13.
The worst performers were Proterra Inc (NASDAQ:PTRA) which was down 88.31% to 0.17 in late trade, Genesis Unicorn Capital Corp (NASDAQ:ESGL) which lost 48.02% to settle at 4.00 and VistaGen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VTGN) which was down 43.14% to 7.42 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1820 to 1108 and 85 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2067 fell and 1395 advanced, while 155 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.40% to 15.99.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.54% or 10.60 to $1,959.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.03% or 0.84 to hit $82.78 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.80% or 0.68 to trade at $86.02 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.10, while USD/JPY rose 0.62% to 143.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.49% at 102.36.
