Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Technology and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.38%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.80%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.69%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 3.16% or 3.18 points to trade at 103.82 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 1.61% or 1.64 points to end at 103.26 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 1.32% or 1.70 points to 130.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.97% or 13.41 points to trade at 437.50 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 2.36% or 1.01 points to end at 41.85 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.34% or 4.87 points to 203.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 8.36% to 88.29, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which was up 6.00% to settle at 92.45 and Corteva Inc (NYSE:CTVA) which gained 5.35% to close at 26.78.
The worst performers were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 8.01% to 15.16 in late trade, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which lost 7.39% to settle at 62.87 and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 6.52% to 76.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kelly Services B Inc (NASDAQ:KELYB) which rose 158.47% to 38.28, Oxbridge Re Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:OXBR) which was up 56.41% to settle at 1.8300 and Biofrontera AG ADR (NASDAQ:BFRA) which gained 53.36% to close at 20.32.
The worst performers were Fulcrum Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:FULC) which was down 48.01% to 8.90 in late trade, Mesoblast Ltd (NASDAQ:MESO) which lost 34.96% to settle at 11.33 and Fennec Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:FENC) which was down 34.51% to 6.66 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1565 to 1489 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1677 fell and 1128 advanced, while 65 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.59% to 24.03.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 5.35% or 108.65 to $1921.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.72% or 0.30 to hit $41.64 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.09 to trade at $44.54 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1742, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 106.52.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 93.640.
