Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.28%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.69%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 5.57% or 2.52 points to trade at 47.73 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 2.19% or 1.82 points to end at 84.85 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 1.30% or 1.77 points to 137.79 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.45% or 3.24 points to trade at 128.81 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 1.76% or 0.90 points to end at 50.18 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) shed 1.50% or 3.34 points to 218.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which rose 11.17% to 185.00, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was up 6.84% to settle at 269.81 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) which gained 5.57% to close at 47.73.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 7.98% to 809.79 in late trade, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which lost 6.92% to settle at 47.92 and Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which was down 4.29% to 135.09 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) which rose 101.89% to 3.210, GeoVax Labs Inc (NASDAQ:GOVX) which was up 63.03% to settle at 5.3800 and Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which gained 57.44% to close at 1.410.
The worst performers were Bit Digital Inc (NASDAQ:BTBT) which was down 27.05% to 18.2600 in late trade, Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which lost 24.57% to settle at 8.78 and Future Fintech Group Inc (NASDAQ:FTFT) which was down 24.41% to 5.7600 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1877 to 1210 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1726 fell and 1339 advanced, while 43 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.78% to 24.53.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.56% or 10.35 to $1845.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.42% or 0.22 to hit $52.02 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.58 to trade at $55.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.49% to 1.2159, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 104.17.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 90.475.
