Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.70%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.39%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 4.03% or 6.30 points to trade at 162.71 at the close. DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP) added 3.40% or 2.36 points to end at 71.84 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 3.30% or 10.97 points to 343.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 0.80% or 0.12 points to trade at 14.82 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 0.03% or 0.06 points to end at 184.06 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) gained 0.18% or 0.18 points to 99.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CSRA Inc (NYSE:CSRA) which rose 31.05% to 40.39, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which was up 6.29% to settle at 115.43 and Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which gained 5.78% to close at 13.180.
The worst performers were Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was down 4.15% to 209.48 in late trade, Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which lost 3.23% to settle at 95.09 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 2.69% to 31.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Dare Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:DARE) which rose 50.00% to 2.790, Iconix Brand Group Inc (NASDAQ:ICON) which was up 38.40% to settle at 1.73 and Aqua Metals Inc (NASDAQ:AQMS) which gained 35.80% to close at 2.20.
The worst performers were Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which was down 23.27% to 3.43 in late trade, Collplant Holdings Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:CLGN) which lost 22.47% to settle at 7.90 and Cenveo Inc (NASDAQ:CVO) which was down 21.21% to 0.185 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2285 to 842 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1598 rose and 935 declined, while 130 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.87% to 25.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.68% or 9.00 to $1324.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.19% or 0.11 to hit $59.31 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.14 to trade at $62.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.35% to 1.2293, while USD/JPY fell 0.13% to 108.65.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 90.02.
