Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.97% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.88%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 8.90% or 13.39 points to trade at 163.78 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 5.54% or 10.41 points to end at 198.25 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 3.25% or 5.12 points to 162.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 8.56% or 3.40 points to trade at 36.31 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 6.18% or 9.15 points to end at 138.91 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed 0.91% or 2.28 points to 247.47.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) which rose 10.40% to 135.00, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) which was up 8.90% to settle at 163.78 and WW Grainger Inc (NYSE:GWW) which gained 8.30% to close at 543.53.
The worst performers were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which was down 8.56% to 36.31 in late trade, Church & Dwight Company Inc (NYSE:CHD) which lost 8.28% to settle at 88.24 and VF Corporation (NYSE:VFC) which was down 8.01% to 44.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Brookline Capital Acquisition Corp. (NASDAQ:BCAC) which rose 125.30% to 22.71, Senti Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SNTI) which was up 68.28% to settle at 3.13 and NRX Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NRXP) which gained 51.57% to close at 0.79.
The worst performers were Virax Biolabs Group Ltd (NASDAQ:VRAX) which was down 74.04% to 5.40 in late trade, Lottery.com Inc (NASDAQ:LTRY) which lost 63.79% to settle at 0.29 and Nutriband Inc (NASDAQ:NTRB) which was down 34.11% to 5.12 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2235 to 922 and 160 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2102 rose and 1617 declined, while 301 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.48% to 21.33 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.66% or 11.50 to $1,761.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.05% or 1.98 to hit $98.40 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.95% or 1.99 to trade at $103.82 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.30% to 1.02, while USD/JPY fell 0.77% to 133.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.51% at 105.70.
