Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.74% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 2.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 4.11% or 8.89 points to trade at 225.33 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.38% or 4.33 points to end at 132.16 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.97% or 6.43 points to 223.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 1.67% or 4.91 points to trade at 289.29 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 1.65% or 2.28 points to end at 135.76 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 1.26% or 1.68 points to 131.92.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which rose 17.96% to 591.89, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which was up 7.58% to settle at 10.78 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which gained 6.27% to close at 21.52.
The worst performers were Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK) which was down 7.07% to 42.58 in late trade, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) which lost 4.91% to settle at 45.71 and TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 4.18% to 11.23 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Obalon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OBLN) which rose 475.78% to 9.270, Caladrius Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CLBS) which was up 107.98% to settle at 3.39 and Adamis Pharma (NASDAQ:ADMP) which gained 88.82% to close at 1.5200.
The worst performers were China Natural Resources Inc (NASDAQ:CHNR) which was down 23.61% to 1.780 in late trade, BioLineRx Ltd (NASDAQ:BLRX) which lost 22.56% to settle at 2.455 and Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was down 21.12% to 8.700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1905 to 1176 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1584 rose and 1481 declined, while 61 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.40% to 21.52 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.54% or 28.40 to $1868.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to hit $52.98 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.29% or 0.16 to trade at $55.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.19% to 1.2106, while USD/JPY fell 0.35% to 103.53.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 90.483.
