Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.04% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.53% or 6.12 points to trade at 248.40 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 2.08% or 3.04 points to end at 148.90 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 1.10% or 0.83 points to 76.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 1.27% or 2.17 points to trade at 168.50 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.26% or 2.96 points to end at 231.78 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.13% or 0.61 points to 53.53.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cooper Companies Inc (NYSE:COO) which rose 7.79% to 440.00, Gartner Inc (NYSE:IT) which was up 2.83% to settle at 303.82 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which gained 2.53% to close at 248.40.
The worst performers were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was down 6.53% to 62.36 in late trade, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which lost 6.37% to settle at 70.25 and KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which was down 4.17% to 328.36 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) which rose 64.57% to 2.0900, IEC Electronics Corp (NASDAQ:IEC) which was up 46.78% to settle at 15.28 and The ExOne Company (NASDAQ:XONE) which gained 44.97% to close at 25.05.
The worst performers were Medavail Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MDVL) which was down 52.46% to 3.57 in late trade, Lifestance Health Group Inc (NASDAQ:LFST) which lost 46.91% to settle at 11.61 and Gohealth Llc (NASDAQ:GOCO) which was down 42.80% to 4.69 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1824 to 1379 and 145 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2075 fell and 1431 advanced, while 176 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.93% to 15.59 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.07% or 1.25 to $1754.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.45% or 0.31 to hit $68.94 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.26 to trade at $71.18 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.02% to 1.1735, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 110.44.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 92.998.
