Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.17%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.92%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which fell 0.10% or 0.03 points to trade at 30.90 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) fell 0.11% or 0.05 points to end at 44.63 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.16% or 0.13 points to 79.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 3.08% or 3.01 points to trade at 94.81 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 2.39% or 0.69 points to end at 27.95 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 2.26% or 3.40 points to 147.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were St Jude Medical Inc (NYSE:STJ) which rose 25.55% to 77.79, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which was up 7.20% to settle at 116.73 and Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which gained 6.26% to close at 29.53.
The worst performers were Harman International Industries (NYSE:HAR) which was down 13.31% to 77.07 in late trade, Hologic Inc (NASDAQ:HOLX) which lost 10.34% to settle at 33.92 and FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) which was down 9.93% to 32.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Paragon Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:PRGN) which rose 573.34% to 1.7500, Sino-Global Shipping America Ltd (NASDAQ:SINO) which was up 53.13% to settle at 0.9800 and Dehaier Medical Systems Ltd (NASDAQ:DHRM) which gained 43.18% to close at 1.890.
The worst performers were Silicon Graphics International (NASDAQ:SGI) which was down 34.19% to 4.60 in late trade, Trio Merger Corp (NASDAQ:SAEX) which lost 31.82% to settle at 0.600 and Infinera Corporation (NASDAQ:INFN) which was down 22.93% to 12.00 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2134 to 1192 and 26 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1692 fell and 885 advanced, while 51 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.31% to 15.19.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.49% or 18.65 to $1269.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.13% or 0.51 to hit $45.84 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.24% or 0.58 to trade at $47.51 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.25% to 1.1351, while USD/JPY fell 2.96% to 108.15.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.67% at 93.75.
