U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.00%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Financials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.00%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.98%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.01%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD), which rose 1.00% or 0.66 points to trade at 66.77 at the close. Meanwhile, Walt Disney Company (N:DIS) added 0.65% or 0.75 points to end at 116.42 and Procter & Gamble Company (N:PG) was down 0.23% or 0.17 points to 75.40 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Caterpillar Inc (N:CAT), which fell 2.64% or 1.95 points to trade at 71.89 at the close. Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) declined 2.14% or 1.79 points to end at 81.95 and International Business Machines (N:IBM) was down 2.13% or 2.94 points to 135.31.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Plum Creek Timber Company Inc (N:PCL) which rose 17.30% to 47.26, Apache Corporation (N:APA) which was up 13.15% to settle at 53.94 and Norfolk Southern Corporation (N:NSC) which gained 10.96% to close at 88.62.

The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (N:MNK) which was down 17.00% to 58.01 in late trade, Priceline.com Incorporated (O:PCLN) which lost 9.55% to settle at 1311.39 and Juniper Networks Inc (N:JNPR) which was down 7.79% to 29.24 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Skyline Medical Inc (O:SKLN) which rose 90.88% to 5.4400, XOMA Corporation (O:XOMA) which was up 24.39% to settle at 1.530 and Biolase Inc (O:BIOL) which gained 23.88% to close at 0.768.

The worst performers were xG Technology Inc (O:XGTI) which was down 28.23% to 0.445 in late trade, Anavex Life Sciences Corp (O:AVXL) which lost 24.39% to settle at 6.200 and Capstone Turbine Corporation (O:CPST) which was down 23.85% to 3.040 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1997 to 529 and 5 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1766 fell and 767 advanced, while 45 ended unchanged.

Shares in Plum Creek Timber Company Inc (N:PCL) rose to 52-week highs; rising 17.30% or 6.97 to 47.26. Shares in International Business Machines (N:IBM) fell to 5-year lows; down 2.13% or 2.94 to 135.31. Shares in Capstone Turbine Corporation (O:CPST) fell to 5-year highs; falling 23.85% or 0.952 to 3.040.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 14.45% to 16.40.

Gold for December delivery was up 0.30% or 3.30 to $1091.00 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.65% or 0.29 to hit $44.00 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.34% or 0.17 to trade at $48.01 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.11% to 1.0752, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 123.16.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.18% at 99.11.
