Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.35%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.24%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 3.35% or 4.79 points to trade at 147.75 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) added 1.97% or 0.78 points to end at 40.43 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.98% or 0.87 points to 89.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 0.69% or 2.40 points to trade at 347.33 in late trade. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) declined 0.48% or 0.65 points to end at 133.47 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.39% or 0.54 points to 137.47.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kraft Heinz Co (NASDAQ:KHC) which rose 7.69% to 63.97, Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) which was up 7.78% to settle at 55.72 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which gained 6.80% to close at 31.89.
The worst performers were Stericycle Inc (NASDAQ:SRCL) which was down 12.94% to 61.79 in late trade, Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which lost 10.37% to settle at 18.71 and Noble Energy Inc (NYSE:NBL) which was down 7.70% to 32.97 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Oxbridge Re Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:OXBR) which rose 40.00% to 2.45, Pixelworks Inc (NASDAQ:PXLW) which was up 27.91% to settle at 4.170 and Hanwha Q Cells Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HQCL) which gained 25.00% to close at 8.250.
The worst performers were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 29.70% to 0.070 in late trade, Varex Imaging Corp (NASDAQ:VREX) which lost 26.47% to settle at 28.30 and Immersion Corporation (NASDAQ:IMMR) which was down 25.51% to 10.60 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1623 to 1349 and 41 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1577 fell and 912 advanced, while 113 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.27% to 11.67 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.41% or 5.00 to $1225.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.94% or 0.65 to hit $68.31 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.31% or 0.23 to trade at $73.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1590, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 111.23.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 94.88.
