Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.10% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.13% or 2.15 points to trade at 103.32 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.05% or 1.04 points to end at 51.75 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was up 1.53% or 1.37 points to 90.71 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 1.38% or 0.75 points to trade at 53.55 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.20% or 1.89 points to end at 155.17 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 0.87% or 1.20 points to 136.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which rose 12.63% to 123.94, EOG Resources Inc (NYSE:EOG) which was up 5.11% to settle at 85.42 and Concho Resources Inc (NYSE:CXO) which gained 4.79% to close at 126.26.
The worst performers were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was down 12.76% to 252.86 in late trade, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which lost 10.88% to settle at 138.13 and TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which was down 3.96% to 68.63 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which rose 136.19% to 2.480, Erickson Air-Crane Inc (NASDAQ:EAC) which was up 121.82% to settle at 1.220 and Ldr Holding (NASDAQ:LDRH) which gained 63.82% to close at 36.99.
The worst performers were Hailiang Education Group Inc (NASDAQ:HLG) which was down 49.38% to 4.05 in late trade, DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which lost 45.34% to settle at 1.2900 and Delcath Systems Inc (NASDAQ:DCTH) which was down 20.91% to 0.2610 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2074 to 1241 and 33 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1318 fell and 1240 advanced, while 84 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.78% to 14.03.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.04% or 0.45 to $1246.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.47% or 0.73 to hit $50.42 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.80% or 0.91 to trade at $51.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1357, while USD/JPY fell 0.20% to 107.34.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.18% at 93.86.
