Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.61%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 3.74% or 2.03 points to trade at 56.38 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.57% or 1.20 points to end at 47.96 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 1.88% or 2.14 points to 115.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 3.10% or 3.84 points to trade at 119.84 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 2.17% or 5.24 points to end at 236.56 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) shed 1.69% or 2.73 points to 158.60.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which rose 4.74% to 34.02, LyondellBasell Industries NV (NYSE:LYB) which was up 4.63% to settle at 77.69 and Pacific Gas & Electric Co (NYSE:PCG) which gained 4.62% to close at 17.89.
The worst performers were Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was down 10.27% to 51.82 in late trade, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which lost 7.51% to settle at 164.15 and Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) which was down 6.12% to 1038.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Legacy Reserves Inc (NASDAQ:LGCY) which rose 320.30% to 0.53, Vislink Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:VISL) which was up 80.00% to settle at 2.9700 and Approach Resources Inc (NASDAQ:AREX) which gained 38.54% to close at 0.2962.
The worst performers were FTD Companies Inc (NASDAQ:FTD) which was down 75.83% to 0.19 in late trade, Changyoucom Limited (NASDAQ:CYOU) which lost 51.20% to settle at 8.96 and DelMar Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:DMPI) which was down 49.75% to 2.050 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1958 to 1050 and 83 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1359 rose and 1309 declined, while 79 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.80% to 18.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.45% or 19.05 to $1330.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.20% or 0.64 to hit $52.86 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.13% or 0.08 to trade at $60.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1244, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 108.06.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.53% at 97.148.
