Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.24% or 1.80 points to trade at 82.10 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 2.16% or 4.46 points to end at 210.69 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 1.24% or 1.64 points to 133.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 3.19% or 8.55 points to trade at 259.73 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 2.12% or 7.42 points to end at 341.86 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.91% or 2.49 points to 127.60.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 9.17% to 29.890, United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which was up 5.05% to settle at 159.99 and Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which gained 5.03% to close at 49.09.
The worst performers were Brown Forman (NYSE:BFb) which was down 6.13% to 50.71 in late trade, Torchmark Corporation (NYSE:TMK) which lost 4.45% to settle at 84.46 and Anthem Inc (NYSE:ANTM) which was down 3.42% to 262.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Netlist Inc (NASDAQ:NLST) which rose 165.96% to 0.750, Freds Inc (NASDAQ:FRED) which was up 81.65% to settle at 2.97 and Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BLPH) which gained 30.48% to close at 1.280.
The worst performers were Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which was down 24.57% to 0.660 in late trade, Acorda Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACOR) which lost 24.50% to settle at 20.80 and XBiotech Inc (NASDAQ:XBIT) which was down 22.35% to 2.78 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1816 to 1209 and 129 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1299 rose and 1289 declined, while 123 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.84% to 14.16.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.05% or 0.60 to $1201.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.34% or 0.23 to hit $67.52 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.01% or 0.01 to trade at $77.34 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1595, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 111.11.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 95.12.
