Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Consumer Services, Utilities and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.60% or 1.32 points to trade at 83.68 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 0.85% or 0.89 points to end at 105.41 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 0.83% or 0.39 points to 47.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 1.86% or 2.07 points to trade at 109.44 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.82% or 4.76 points to end at 257.14 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.30% or 0.55 points to 41.68.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which rose 9.64% to 10.35, Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which was up 3.74% to settle at 21.36 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which gained 3.63% to close at 25.13.
The worst performers were Activision Blizzard Inc (NASDAQ:ATVI) which was down 7.60% to 40.11 in late trade, Loews Corporation (NYSE:L) which lost 6.13% to settle at 44.56 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 3.19% to 126.63 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were CLPS Inc (NASDAQ:CLPS) which rose 39.82% to 15.73, SPI Energy Co Ltd (NASDAQ:SPI) which was up 34.07% to settle at 3.62 and SilverSun Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SSNT) which gained 31.59% to close at 3.3030.
The worst performers were Celldex Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CLDX) which was down 19.04% to 4.76 in late trade, Auris Medical Holding AG (NASDAQ:EARS) which lost 18.53% to settle at 0.355 and Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which was down 18.25% to 1.0300 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1937 to 1066 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1598 rose and 1017 declined, while 110 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.59% to 15.97.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.52% or 6.85 to $1311.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.64% or 0.34 to hit $52.38 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.98% or 0.61 to trade at $61.49 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.44% to 1.1279, while USD/JPY rose 0.60% to 110.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 96.850.
