Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Oil & Gas and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.85%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 2.30% or 2.44 points to trade at 108.75 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.55% or 0.68 points to end at 44.69 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.03% or 2.60 points to 255.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 1.75% or 1.93 points to trade at 108.04 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 1.73% or 0.24 points to end at 13.65 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 1.01% or 1.56 points to 153.15.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which rose 5.11% to 113.50, Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:CMCSA) which was up 4.64% to settle at 33.82 and Discovery Inc Class A (NASDAQ:DISCA) which gained 4.47% to close at 25.50.
The worst performers were Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 5.18% to 39.51 in late trade, Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which lost 4.91% to settle at 45.90 and Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which was down 4.54% to 200.22 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were AGM Group Holdings Inc Class A (NASDAQ:AGMH) which rose 71.39% to 27.80, Destination Maternity Corporation (NASDAQ:DEST) which was up 50.43% to settle at 5.19 and Tintri Inc (NASDAQ:TNTR) which gained 35.85% to close at 0.72.
The worst performers were Achieve Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:ACHV) which was down 25.18% to 5.2000 in late trade, ClearOne Inc (NASDAQ:CLRO) which lost 21.30% to settle at 4.53 and Sonoma Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNOA) which was down 21.20% to 3.160 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1761 to 1366 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1481 rose and 1039 declined, while 153 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.49% to 12.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.36% or 4.70 to $1306.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.51% or 0.34 to hit $66.98 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.04% or 0.80 to trade at $75.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.76% to 1.1583, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 110.62.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.37% at 94.84.
