Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.01% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.36% or 4.94 points to trade at 367.44 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 0.89% or 2.26 points to end at 255.83 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.75% or 1.75 points to 236.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 7.33% or 3.55 points to trade at 44.91 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.06% or 1.57 points to end at 147.15 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.73% or 1.05 points to 143.44.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DXC Technology Co (NYSE:DXC) which rose 3.55% to 35.83, NetApp Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP) which was up 3.18% to settle at 61.98 and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which gained 3.10% to close at 20.29.
The worst performers were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) which was down 7.33% to 44.91 in late trade, Kraft Heinz Co (NASDAQ:KHC) which lost 5.90% to settle at 30.96 and CenterPoint Energy Inc (NYSE:CNP) which was down 4.98% to 26.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sienna Biopharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNNA) which rose 68.75% to 0.27, Astrotech Corp (NASDAQ:ASTC) which was up 43.70% to settle at 1.710 and Microvision Inc (NASDAQ:MVIS) which gained 31.59% to close at 0.979.
The worst performers were VistaGen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VTGN) which was down 72.16% to 0.300 in late trade, Leap Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:LPTX) which lost 45.48% to settle at 0.63 and Lipocine Inc (NASDAQ:LPCN) which was down 41.55% to 0.40 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1556 to 1264 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1486 fell and 1149 advanced, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.38% to 13.05.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.59% or 8.70 to $1472.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.37% or 0.21 to hit $56.91 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $62.34 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1022, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 108.39.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.21% at 98.028.
