Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.38% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 2.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 0.09% or 0.10 points to trade at 106.11 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) fell 0.28% or 0.16 points to end at 56.75 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was down 0.29% or 0.14 points to 48.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 5.81% or 11.46 points to trade at 185.72 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 4.88% or 17.30 points to end at 337.37 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 4.60% or 6.04 points to 125.30.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 2.52% to 30.91, American Water Works (NYSE:AWK) which was up 2.24% to settle at 110.69 and HCP Inc (NYSE:HCP) which gained 2.04% to close at 30.95.
The worst performers were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 11.89% to 20.16 in late trade, Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which lost 9.43% to settle at 20.08 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 8.05% to 2.400 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reven Housing Reit Inc (NASDAQ:RVEN) which rose 36.55% to 4.57, ClearSign Combustion Corporation (NASDAQ:CLIR) which was up 18.89% to settle at 1.070 and PAM Transportation Services Inc (NASDAQ:PTSI) which gained 19.18% to close at 55.36.
The worst performers were Insys Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:INSY) which was down 73.61% to 0.95 in late trade, ARC Group Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:ARCW) which lost 23.66% to settle at 0.500 and Taronis Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TRNX) which was down 22.60% to 0.441 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2517 to 507 and 67 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2269 fell and 415 advanced, while 46 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 28.12% to 20.55 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.04% or 13.40 to $1300.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.33% or 0.82 to hit $60.84 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $69.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1225, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 109.27.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 97.160.
