Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.84% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 3.03% or 3.24 points to trade at 110.08 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.32% or 1.78 points to end at 137.07 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.07% or 2.15 points to 202.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 5.09% or 5.27 points to trade at 98.17 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 4.88% or 2.46 points to end at 47.91 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 4.83% or 8.19 points to 161.36.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which rose 4.06% to 183.21, Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was up 4.02% to settle at 77.94 and Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) which gained 3.76% to close at 118.15.
The worst performers were TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 9.82% to 6.70 in late trade, Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which lost 9.20% to settle at 29.82 and Federal Realty Investment Trust (NYSE:FRT) which was down 9.17% to 73.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cardiff Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CRDF) which rose 33.18% to 11.600, Acasti Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ACST) which was up 28.99% to settle at 0.2790 and CleanSpark Inc (NASDAQ:CLSK) which gained 28.48% to close at 14.84.
The worst performers were Nextdecade Corp (NASDAQ:NEXT) which was down 25.10% to 3.67 in late trade, Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:EGLE) which lost 23.89% to settle at 17.71 and Wave Life Sciences Ltd (NASDAQ:WVE) which was down 22.98% to 15.05 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2694 to 430 and 41 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2361 fell and 536 advanced, while 37 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.55% to 27.78.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 2.27% or 44.50 to $1917.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.68% or 1.52 to hit $39.80 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.05 to trade at $41.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1771, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 104.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.65% at 93.560.
