Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.55%, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.50%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 2.74% or 3.93 points to trade at 147.31 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.88% or 0.33 points to end at 37.70 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 0.51% or 1.79 points to 350.37 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 6.17% or 9.86 points to trade at 149.96 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 3.93% or 4.17 points to end at 101.83 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 3.73% or 5.62 points to 145.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Match Group Inc (NASDAQ:MTCH) which rose 4.19% to 45.74, Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which was up 3.70% to settle at 214.95 and Dupont De Nemours Inc (NYSE:DD) which gained 3.07% to close at 60.50.
The worst performers were Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which was down 12.77% to 67.43 in late trade, Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which lost 12.42% to settle at 16.79 and Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was down 10.92% to 158.46 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Benefitfocus Inc (NASDAQ:BNFT) which rose 48.21% to 10.36, Forza X1 Inc (NASDAQ:FRZA) which was up 44.97% to settle at 2.45 and Bandwidth Inc (NASDAQ:BAND) which gained 41.63% to close at 17.42.
The worst performers were Cardlytics Inc (NASDAQ:CDLX) which was down 53.41% to 4.51 in late trade, Enovix Corp (NASDAQ:ENVX) which lost 41.47% to settle at 10.53 and Selina Hospitality (NASDAQ:SLNA) which was down 36.62% to 6.30 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2474 to 593 and 96 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2857 fell and 946 advanced, while 122 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.19% to 25.86.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.67% or 11.05 to $1,638.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.97% or 0.86 to hit $89.23 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.93% or 0.88 to trade at $95.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.49% to 0.98, while USD/JPY fell 0.31% to 147.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.50% at 111.92.
