Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.34%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 0.16% or 0.22 points to trade at 139.61 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 points to end at 38.57 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was down 0.03% or 0.04 points to 121.97 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.81% or 11.66 points to trade at 159.54 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.87% or 3.34 points to end at 113.16 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.12% or 4.47 points to 205.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Snap-On Inc (NYSE:SNA) which rose 2.92% to 156.05, Jefferies Financial Group Inc (NYSE:JEF) which was up 2.55% to settle at 19.29 and Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which gained 2.38% to close at 53.86.
The worst performers were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) which was down 6.81% to 159.54 in late trade, Cimarex Energy Co (NYSE:XEC) which lost 6.13% to settle at 23.58 and Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which was down 5.38% to 29.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pioneer Pow (NASDAQ:PPSI) which rose 205.73% to 4.800, Electro-Sensors Inc (NASDAQ:ELSE) which was up 146.38% to settle at 8.50 and Asia Pacific Wire & Cable Corp Ltd (NASDAQ:APWC) which gained 96.27% to close at 2.630.
The worst performers were Corbus Pharmaceuticals Holding (NASDAQ:CRBP) which was down 35.98% to 1.21 in late trade, Axovant Gene Therapies Ltd (NASDAQ:AXGT) which lost 26.29% to settle at 4.15 and Miragen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MGEN) which was down 23.49% to 0.5815 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1918 to 1156 and 102 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1631 fell and 1242 advanced, while 102 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.44% to 29.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 2.00% or 38.40 to $1881.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.63% or 0.64 to hit $39.86 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.12% or 0.05 to trade at $41.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1736, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 105.61.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 93.895.
