Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.08% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.82%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 1.83% or 9.01 points to trade at 501.14 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.21% or 0.17 points to end at 82.73 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was down 0.12% or 0.04 points to 34.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 3.89% or 2.16 points to trade at 53.34 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.78% or 1.46 points to end at 51.00 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 2.61% or 2.45 points to 91.59.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) which rose 4.52% to 261.85, Fox Corp Class A (NASDAQ:FOXA) which was up 3.18% to settle at 32.14 and Fox Corp Class B (NASDAQ:FOX) which gained 2.99% to close at 29.59.
The worst performers were Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc (NYSE:ARE) which was down 8.29% to 102.93 in late trade, Boston Properties Inc (NYSE:BXP) which lost 7.14% to settle at 60.88 and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 5.30% to 47.51 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MSP Recovery Inc (NASDAQ:LIFW) which rose 54.68% to 0.24, Near Intelligence Inc (NASDAQ:NIR) which was up 40.53% to settle at 0.29 and Solowin Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:SWIN) which gained 35.00% to close at 4.05.
The worst performers were Travere Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TVTX) which was down 40.68% to 7.64 in late trade, Cheche Group Inc (NASDAQ:CCG) which lost 40.60% to settle at 14.85 and Seelos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SEEL) which was down 37.73% to 0.19 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2461 to 480 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2479 fell and 1001 advanced, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 15.85% to 17.54 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.37% or 26.95 to $1,940.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.11% or 0.10 to hit $89.56 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.32% or 0.30 to trade at $93.23 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.07, while USD/JPY fell 0.55% to 147.51.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 105.07.
