Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.02%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 1.93% or 5.04 points to trade at 266.01 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.66% or 2.19 points to end at 332.14 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was down 0.03% or 0.04 points to 141.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 3.34% or 1.85 points to trade at 53.53 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.92% or 4.79 points to end at 159.24 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 2.55% or 3.94 points to 150.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which rose 2.95% to 15.37, DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which was up 2.89% to settle at 126.84 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which gained 1.93% to close at 266.01.
The worst performers were Discover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS) which was down 9.44% to 92.96 in late trade, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which lost 6.01% to settle at 59.47 and First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was down 5.49% to 199.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Delcath Systems Inc (NASDAQ:DCTH) which rose 81.73% to 5.67, Novo Integrated Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:NVOS) which was up 63.61% to settle at 0.12 and T2 Biosystms Inc (NASDAQ:TTOO) which gained 51.56% to close at 0.59.
The worst performers were Galecto Inc (NASDAQ:GLTO) which was down 71.22% to 0.67 in late trade, Design Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:DSGN) which lost 70.46% to settle at 2.17 and Alaunos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TCRT) which was down 64.69% to 0.14 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2454 to 478 and 66 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2489 fell and 1024 advanced, while 104 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.07% to 16.46.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.53% or 10.35 to $1,933.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.88% or 1.55 to hit $80.96 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.53% or 1.32 to trade at $84.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 145.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 103.10.
