Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.86% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.34% or 0.71 points to trade at 31.24 at the close. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) added 1.13% or 2.58 points to end at 231.89 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 0.68% or 0.36 points to 53.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 3.38% or 3.41 points to trade at 97.45 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.50% or 7.33 points to end at 285.75 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 2.44% or 5.26 points to 210.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ball Corporation (NYSE:BALL) which rose 13.39% to 59.26, Fleetcor Technologies Inc (NYSE:FLT) which was up 7.84% to settle at 223.60 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which gained 7.16% to close at 71.88.
The worst performers were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 28.35% to 16.40 in late trade, PENN Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) which lost 13.65% to settle at 26.00 and Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) which was down 12.28% to 31.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Qurate Retail Inc Series B (NASDAQ:QRTEB) which rose 74.76% to 7.16, Soligenix Inc (NASDAQ:SNGX) which was up 60.56% to settle at 2.28 and Inseego Corp (NASDAQ:INSG) which gained 52.66% to close at 0.82.
The worst performers were TOP Financial Group Ltd (NASDAQ:TOP) which was down 79.39% to 17.48 in late trade, PacWest Bancorp (NASDAQ:PACW) which lost 50.62% to settle at 3.17 and Sensus Healthcare Inc (NASDAQ:SRTS) which was down 44.38% to 2.72 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2016 to 956 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2129 fell and 1417 advanced, while 164 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.54% to 20.09 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.08% or 22.10 to $2,059.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.07% or 0.05 to hit $68.55 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.08 to trade at $72.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 134.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 101.19.
