Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.71%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.15%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 4.94% or 6.63 points to trade at 140.75 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 2.68% or 6.71 points to end at 257.09 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) was up 1.64% or 1.02 points to 63.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 7.60% or 10.04 points to trade at 121.98 in late trade. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 3.85% or 6.83 points to end at 170.46 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 3.73% or 4.08 points to 105.20.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which rose 4.94% to 140.75, General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) which was up 4.61% to settle at 71.51 and Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) which gained 4.36% to close at 78.92.
The worst performers were Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which was down 7.77% to 56.26 in late trade, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which lost 7.60% to settle at 121.98 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 7.41% to 8.50 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ayala Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AYLA) which rose 94.25% to 1.69, Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) which was up 73.11% to settle at 16.74 and Freight Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:FRGT) which gained 67.57% to close at 2.48.
The worst performers were Revelation Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:REVB) which was down 51.39% to 0.49 in late trade, Luokung Technology Corp (NASDAQ:LKCO) which lost 41.19% to settle at 0.24 and Exela Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:XELA) which was down 36.43% to 1.85 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1949 to 1176 and 139 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2320 fell and 1412 advanced, while 242 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.69% to 24.69.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.21% or 3.65 to $1,715.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.50% or 1.45 to hit $95.25 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.72% or 0.72 to trade at $99.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.99% to 1.01, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 136.87.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.67% at 107.07.
