Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.60% or 2.56 points to trade at 162.33 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.10% or 1.71 points to end at 156.90 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 1.06% or 1.74 points to 165.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 4.09% or 20.04 points to trade at 469.65 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 2.89% or 1.56 points to end at 52.44 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 2.08% or 2.88 points to 135.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB) which rose 7.53% to 733.29, Lamb Weston Holdings Inc (NYSE:LW) which was up 7.45% to settle at 67.82 and Citizens Financial Group Inc (NYSE:CFG) which gained 5.55% to close at 53.81.
The worst performers were Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which was down 19.37% to 367.53 in late trade, Bath Body Works Inc (NYSE:BBWI) which lost 6.40% to settle at 62.34 and Nucor Corp (NYSE:NUE) which was down 4.99% to 116.60 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Eargo Inc (NASDAQ:EAR) which rose 59.65% to 7.28, Alterity Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ATHE) which was up 33.85% to settle at 1.1100 and China Natural Resources Inc (NASDAQ:CHNR) which gained 27.79% to close at 0.8600.
The worst performers were Dogness International Corp Class A (NASDAQ:DOGZ) which was down 61.90% to 3.3300 in late trade, Aligos Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALGS) which lost 56.74% to settle at 4.59 and Berkeley Lights Inc (NASDAQ:BLI) which was down 39.27% to 9.88 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1779 to 1451 and 149 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1962 fell and 1858 advanced, while 210 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.61% to 19.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.88% or 34.30 to $1790.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.34% or 1.82 to hit $79.67 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.02 to trade at $82.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.05% to 1.1297, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 115.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 96.245.
