Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Financials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.36%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.72%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which rose 2.60% or 3.10 points to trade at 122.18 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 2.28% or 5.56 points to end at 249.48 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 2.21% or 3.06 points to 141.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 8.29% or 11.76 points to trade at 130.15 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 5.04% or 10.58 points to end at 199.27 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 3.81% or 3.22 points to 81.30.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which rose 26.11% to 281.87, Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was up 7.98% to settle at 40.04 and Under Armour Inc C (NYSE:UA) which gained 6.88% to close at 19.420.
The worst performers were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was down 16.76% to 100.02 in late trade, The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) which lost 8.29% to settle at 130.15 and Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE:KMB) which was down 7.05% to 129.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Trovagene Inc (NASDAQ:TROV) which rose 70.48% to 1.790, Biontech Se (NASDAQ:BNTX) which was up 26.78% to settle at 20.64 and Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which gained 26.11% to close at 281.87.
The worst performers were Tile Shop Hldgs Inc (NASDAQ:TTS) which was down 66.27% to 1.130 in late trade, Pareteum Corp (NASDAQ:TEUM) which lost 59.53% to settle at 0.299 and Osmotica Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ:OSMT) which was down 27.00% to 3.46 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1618 to 1224 and 103 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1419 fell and 1196 advanced, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.29% to 14.46.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.17% or 2.55 to $1490.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 1.53% or 0.82 to hit $54.33 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.07% or 0.04 to trade at $59.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1125, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 108.47.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 97.262.
