Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.92% or 3.14 points to trade at 166.90 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.87% or 6.08 points to end at 330.73 and Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) was up 1.61% or 3.00 points to 189.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 1.83% or 6.17 points to trade at 331.77 in late trade. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) declined 1.78% or 2.76 points to end at 151.99 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.71% or 3.06 points to 176.30.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which rose 6.80% to 37.09, PNC Financial Services Group Inc (NYSE:PNC) which was up 5.70% to settle at 124.75 and KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) which gained 4.91% to close at 11.76.
The worst performers were Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which was down 13.50% to 109.60 in late trade, Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which lost 8.11% to settle at 57.47 and Northern Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:NTRS) which was down 6.79% to 71.85 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ:AXLA) which rose 59.17% to 1.14, Avalo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:AVTX) which was up 45.47% to settle at 0.12 and Impel Neuropharma Inc (NASDAQ:IMPL) which gained 34.55% to close at 0.55.
The worst performers were ACELYRIN Inc (NASDAQ:SLRN) which was down 54.12% to 12.80 in late trade, Datasea Inc (NASDAQ:DTSS) which lost 50.67% to settle at 0.32 and Sight Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SGHT) which was down 49.62% to 3.28 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1483 to 1419 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1857 fell and 1598 advanced, while 149 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.12% to 14.23.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.59% or 11.55 to $1,935.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.83% or 1.60 to hit $88.89 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.64% or 1.49 to trade at $92.13 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.10% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.35% to 147.10.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 104.31.
