Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 3.19%, while the S&P 500 index added 3.35%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 3.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 8.00% or 9.85 points to trade at 133.01 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 7.28% or 5.22 points to end at 76.95 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 7.03% or 10.53 points to 160.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.00% or 9.72 points to trade at 152.28 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 0.32% or 0.09 points to end at 28.65 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) gained 0.81% or 1.28 points to 159.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which rose 12.52% to 100.13, Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI) which was up 10.52% to settle at 178.26 and Autodesk Inc (NASDAQ:ADSK) which gained 10.13% to close at 155.91.
The worst performers were Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which was down 15.43% to 4.11 in late trade, Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which lost 14.26% to settle at 5.41 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 13.71% to 29.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Electrocore LLC (NASDAQ:ECOR) which rose 199.88% to 1.210, Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was up 130.23% to settle at 0.5399 and Supercom Lt (NASDAQ:SPCB) which gained 107.73% to close at 1.0800.
The worst performers were Second Sight Medical Products (NASDAQ:EYES) which was down 51.27% to 1.14 in late trade, Tilray Inc (NASDAQ:TLRY) which lost 27.36% to settle at 6.61 and Centennial Resource Development Inc (NASDAQ:CDEV) which was down 26.65% to 0.26 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1713 to 1172 and 41 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1648 rose and 1034 declined, while 56 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 12.91% to 57.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.65% or 10.70 to $1643.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 5.76% or 1.24 to hit $20.27 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.19% or 0.05 to trade at $26.45 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1049, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 107.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.59% at 99.118.
