Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.33%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.74%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which rose 5.97% or 4.05 points to trade at 71.89 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 4.33% or 7.93 points to end at 191.04 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 4.18% or 6.54 points to 163.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which lost 1.72% or 1.37 points to trade at 78.35 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.67% or 0.94 points to end at 55.46 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 0.49% or 0.22 points to 44.67.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 14.65% to 40.84, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was up 11.37% to settle at 43.88 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which gained 10.24% to close at 104.38.
The worst performers were CBOE Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CBOE) which was down 10.41% to 116.94 in late trade, Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which lost 4.68% to settle at 25.28 and Gartner Inc (NYSE:IT) which was down 3.30% to 124.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Asta Funding Inc (NASDAQ:ASFI) which rose 43.36% to 10.25, Cyanotech Corporation (NASDAQ:CYAN) which was up 36.36% to settle at 5.25 and Quotient Ltd (NASDAQ:QTNT) which gained 34.78% to close at 4.03.
The worst performers were Inpixon (NASDAQ:INPX) which was down 38.59% to 4.7900 in late trade, Remark Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARK) which lost 24.86% to settle at 6.950 and Amedica Corp (NASDAQ:AMDA) which was down 15.23% to 2.560 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2234 to 915 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1653 rose and 903 declined, while 109 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 19.27% to 30.13.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.83% or 11.10 to $1325.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.09% or 0.70 to hit $63.45 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.08% or 0.73 to trade at $66.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.2372, while USD/JPY rose 0.47% to 109.60.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 89.57.
